A Fort, A Typhoon and an Engagement

When adults are left on vacation with impending unemployment and looming typhoons, they get either cabin fever or a little silly. We think we fall into the second category. So, Sunday night we built ourselves a fort in our living room. Because our bedroom is so hot, we have been moving our mattress into the living room to be closer to the air-con. Then, we decided to spice things up a bit with our amazing tent!
This is what two college graduates can come up with! Box tape and flat sheets!

D hanging out inside the fort. Our trusty umbrella getting some "dry" fun.

The amazing rear-view of the fort and our kitchen table and couch as supporting foundations.

The view from inside. Best of "Whose Line Is It Anyway" with a campfire candle.

Typhoon #3,298 is hitting us this week. And on the one day we go into Seoul, the rain decides to attack from the ground up!
But, on the plus side we did spy this amazing bit of "google translate."

The Subway Station in Itaewon - The Foreigners District.

The Subway Grid and a Handsome Guy.

Just to show you how we get around here.

The Stairs...ehg.
The ENGAGED COUPLE! Micah and Ally!
Okay, so, here's the story. Way back when Derek and I got engaged, Micah went with Derek to pick out a ring for me. Now, we had originally decided not to do an engagement ring, but Derek-full-of-surprises-Fekkes, lied quite a bit and ended up surprising me with the second best surprise of my life. The first being when he actually asked me to marry him.  In the video when Derek gives me the ring, Micah is the guy singing, "Stand By Me" before Derek cuts in. His sweet girlfriend, who we had the honor of naming, Ally, was sitting on the couch with him.

Cut to present day. Micah wanted to do something special for Ally. In Korea, however, you don't really have an engagement and you don't have a proposal with a ring. Couples already have rings called "couples rings" which are matching rings that signify that you have a "lover." (aka, boyfriend/girlfriend.) So, they had matching rings which resemble western wedding bands with bling. Korean tradition allows the parents of the couple to get together to determine a wedding date. This can be 1 year, 3 years, 5 years or 2 months. Whatever the parents decide. Then, most often, a wedding hall is booked, the bride and groom take their official wedding photos in the their wedding clothes months or weeks before the wedding and life goes on. Because Micah and Ally are both amazing brothers and sisters in Christ and like to do things a bit different, Micah asked us to be a part of his surprise proposal, even thought the couple has already set their date, August 20th. Micah "lied" (like Derek) and told Ally that he was helping Derek plan our upcoming roadtrip, instead he was practicing a song that he first sang to Ally when they went to China to meet Ally's dad, a missionary, to ask for her hand in marriage. The song planned, I added a heart of candles to their sweet surprise.

Ally cried, Micah smiled, they both laughed and enjoyed a sweet moment just between the four of us. The sweet sweet part is Ally's ring is almost exactly like mine. Micah remembered helping Derek pick out my ring and really liked it, so her ring has the same lip as mine. Mine is yellow. Her's is white and beautiful. Something special we can share between the four of us for years to come!
